I’ve been saving beer bottles since summer. Call Hoarders: Buried Alive. Can you blame me? Pinterest is FULL of bottles wrapped in yarn and twine, sprayed and decorated in every which way. So, they have been sitting in the basement for a few months and now I actually wrapped them all up to go into the guest bedroom.
I couldn’t find the colors of yarn I wanted, so I decided to wrap the bottles all in white, then attempt to paint the yarn with craft paint. Plus, I already had all of this stuff on hand, which is always a bonus.
I used 4 beer bottles and those three balls of yarn and a little of the big skein. The craft paint is from Michaels (3 for $1 sale!)
I started out wrapping the bottle from the top. I just put a few dabs of hot glue every few (maybe 5-10) wraps. You will need a little more glue around the top so the yarn doesn’t slip down. Also, when you get to the bottom, it will take a few more dabs of glue to finish off.
My original thought was to wrap it all perfect like above, but I didn’t like how you could see the brown bottle and the label through the cracks. I went back and wrapped more yarn all crazy like up the bottle.
This process only took 1 or 2 dabs of hot glue to hold it all in place.
Now comes the painting part!
I mixed up my first color with some water and a really fancy stirrer. Maybe 1 tbsp paint and 3 tbsp of water. I didn’t measure. It just needs to be watery so it will soak into the yarn easier.
Then I just started blotting paint all over the bottle! I think this process would probably work better with cotton yarn (I used acrylic). It took a bit for the paint to initially soak into the yarn, but after it was wet, it took the paint much easier. It took a couple of coats of paint to get in all the nooks and crannies.
Ta-da! The perfect yarn color!
I repeated this with the rest of my bottles and colors and here are the results! Woot! Now that I know about painting yarn, I will probably start covering all white yarn (oh! and twine) in paint. Can’t stop, won’t stop.
