Alex’s Sporty Big Kid Room

Ohio State Big Kid Room

Oooooh yeah!  You can put a fork in Alex’s room because it is duh-un (done)!  But first, lets take a little gander at what his room used to look like.  Oh, how many nights I sat beside that crib and then toddler bed.

It wasn’t always that messy. I swear.

Anyways, back to how it’s looking now!  I’m so excited with how his room turned out, especially because I was nervous and un-enthused about a Buckeye themed boys room (sorry, John).  All I could picture were giant Block Os and fatheads of Brutus.  Not that those things don’t make a great room, but I just wasn’t that into them.

I wanted to fulfill my husband’s dream of a room that was totally devoted to the Scarlet and Gray, but didn’t want to compromise on the look I was going for.  I nixed John’s request for a Brutus Fathead (like I mentioned above) but allowed a foam finger and some other momentos that John had collected over his years of fan hood.

Even though I wasn’t keen on the idea at first, I now have a hard time choosing my favorite part of the room!

The numbers above his bed are an ode to John and my soccer numbers back in our playing days and the jersey was John’s Troy Smith  jersey.  I kept with the Buckeye color theme for the numbers and really love how they look on the wall.  You can see the full rundown on those here and how we built the bed rails here. The duvet and sham set is from IKEA.

Sporty Boys Room 1

These sports paintings are probably my favorite part of the room, if you are making me choose.  I seem to have lost all of those pictures for my tutorial on those (insert ugly cry here) so, I’ll give you the short and sweet version!

Sports paintings 1

They are on pieces of 1 x12 pine boards cut into squares.  I used Microsoft Publisher to make the templates and just blew up pictures of the different sport balls and printed them out. Then, after putting the base color on each board, I used my most favorite transfer technique to outline the details of each ball. Then I filled those parts in and, voila! I originally got the idea here on Etsy, but I’m not into paying for things I think I can make. It’s a problem that I’m not working on at all.

His drop cloth curtains were a project from a while back. They were super simple to make, see those here!
The OHIO letters were from John’s epically awesome Father’s Day present this year. He has it in his office at work.

The shelf was a gift from John’s parents (thank you!!!) as well as the cool scoreboard clock. If you aren’t up on your Buckeye acronyms, TBDBITL stands for “The Best Damn Band in the Land”.  It’s actually supposed to be a mantle, but it totally works in here!  It was unfinished when we got it, so we used the same Polyshades that we used on the toddler rails to finish it and to match the rest of the existing furniture (which was John’s as a kid).

Sporty Boys Room 3

The dresser is my second favorite part of the room, even if it is pretty much empty now (we have a family closet situation going on, inspired by The Handmade Home–time saver!)  I just really love me a good dresser flip.

So, what do you think? Have I convinced you that a sport room can still be stylish and not overly themey?
